But behind the scenes, it’s powered by something called a large language model (LLM).
Good news is, you don’t need a PhD to understand how it works.
Let’s break it down in plain English.
A large language model is an AI system trained to understand and generate text.
It reads billions of words from books, websites, conversations, and more—so it can learn how humans write, speak, and ask questions.
Think of it like a supercharged autocomplete.
But instead of finishing just one word, it can write essays, emails, poems, or code—one word at a time.
The model is trained by showing it tons of text and asking it to guess the next word, over and over again.
For example, if it sees:
“The sun rises in the…” It learns to predict “east.”
Over time, it gets really good at this guessing game—so good that it can hold full conversations or write entire essays.
This training is done using deep learning, specifically a type of neural network called a transformer (the “T” in GPT).
ChatGPT doesn’t “see” entire words.
It breaks everything into tokens, which are like chunks of text (sometimes a word, sometimes just part of one).
